Day 1: Discovering Banaras
Morning: Dashashwamedh Ghat and Boat Ride
Begin your day by heading to Dashashwamedh Ghat to see the beautiful sunrise. Then, hop on a boat for a 30-minute ride along the Ganges River to enjoy the view of the ghats from the water.
Breakfast: Traditional Banarasi Nashta
After your boat ride, treat yourself to a traditional Banarasi breakfast of Kachori-Sabzi and Jalebi. While Shree Ram Bhandar was closed when I visited, I found a local shop in the narrow lanes where I enjoyed this delicious meal.
Afternoon: Exploring BHU
Head to Banaras Hindu University (BHU), the largest residential campus in Asia, founded by Pt. Madan Mohan Malviya in 1916. The huge 1300-acre campus is home to top institutions and the lovely New Vishwanath Temple, commonly known as VT among students.
Refreshment: Pahalwan Lassi Shop
Just outside the BHU campus, near Lanka crossing, is the famous Pahalwan Lassi Shop. Enjoy a glass of their thick, creamy lassi—a must-try when in Banaras.
Evening: Traditional Dinner
End your day with a traditional dinner at Bati Chokha Restaurant in Teliabagh. A Bati Chokha thali, featuring Sattu Bati, Paneer Bati, Chokha, and Daal Tadka, offers a perfect culinary experience of local flavors.
Day 2: Cultural and Historical Exploration
Morning: Sarnath and Assi Ghat
Begin your second day with a visit to Sarnath, approximately 10 km from Varanasi city center. Explore Buddhist temples, monuments, and excavation sites that speak of ancient history. Next, head to Assi Ghat, known for its cleanliness and vibrant cultural events, including the daily 'Subah-e-Banaras' program.
Afternoon: Ganges River Cruise
Experience a luxurious Ganges river cruise on the Alaknanda, starting near Sant Ravidas Park. This 1.5-hour cruise offers stunning views of the 84 ghats and stops near Dashashwamedh Ghat for the evening Ganga Aarti. The cruise includes complimentary tea, coffee, and cookies, making it a pleasant journey.
Evening: Street Food and Shopping
Finish off your trip with a street food tour around Godowlia Market, where you can enjoy Banarasi chaat and Thandai. Don't forget to explore the local markets for Banarasi sarees and handicrafts, great souvenirs to remember your visit.
